LouCity Secures Spot in Open Cup Round of 32
The 109th edition of the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup makes its appearance in the Bluegrass State. After a 3-1 result, Louisville City defeated the Greenville Triumph to advance to the Round of 32.
The match got off to a fast start when in the second minute LouCity was awarded a corner kick. The delivery from Niall McCabe found Sean Totsch in the box. Totsch’s near post header beat the Greenville centerback Evan Lee into the net.
The match settled in after the initial goal. Possession heavily favored the home side LouCity. In the 21st minute, Amadou Dia was able to make a run deep into the Triumph box and was able to draw defenders out of position. The action allowed Wilson Harris to get wide open at the six-yard box for an easy poke in goal. However, the assistant referee determined Harris was slightly offsides and disallowed the potential second goal of the match.
Greenville’s attack was able to find opportunities late in the first half with transition play. In the 37th minute Ben Zakowski was able to pick out Daniel Castro who had beaten his defender on the way into the Lou City box. Castro uncorked and low driven shot that Danny Faundez was just able to save with his left foot. Moments later Carlos Angiano splits the Lou City defenders with a through ball that lands at the feet of Castro. Faundez reads the action well and makes a diving save off the feet of Castro.
The half closed out with a few more half chances from the home side, but the score remained 1-0.
Lou City came out of the break in a similar fashion to the start of the first half. A poor defensive effort by Greenville led to Adrien Perez making an unchallenged run to the Triumph box. He found Dia who then ushered the ball in the path of Ray Serrano. Serrano’s shot went just wide, but it was a glimpse of how the second half would play out.
In the 49th minute, LouCity was able to double their lead. Jansen Wilson found space on the right side of the box. After outmuscling Greenville’s Tyler Polak, Wilson delivered a ball in front of frame to Harris would made easy work to finish it into the net.
Greenville really struggled to make much head way in the second half. Only five attacking third appearances through the first 25 minutes of the half.
The moment of the match came in the 72nd minute. A long ball for Castro resulted in a scary collision between Faundez and Castro. After a few minutes of training staff attention, Faundez would be subbed off for Ryan Troutman. Troutman, an University of Louisville graduate, would be making his professional debut. In the 84th minute Troutman would get his Open Cup moment to shine. A Greenville transition led to Hayden Anderson shot attempt that Troutman was able to get a leg on for the save. He wasn’t out in the clear yet as the rebound landed at the feet of Castro. Castro’s shot was saved by Troutman’s chest after getting back to his feet. Troutman got some help from his backline as the reshuffled ball needed a block off the goal line to prevent a goal.
Greenville would need stoppage time to crack the scoring sheet. In the 90+3 minute a free kick from Zakowski made its way all the way to the right knee of Anderson for a goal. In the 90+6 minute Greenville’s Zion Scarlett delivered what appeared to be a cross that directed on frame but Troutman was able to cleanly deal with.
LouCity was able to ease all extra-time concerns when in the 90+7 minute a midfield press led to Jorge Gonzalez free run goal to bury the nail on Greenville’s Open Cup hopes.
