LouCity Exits U.S. Open Cup in Third Round

Louisville City FC suffered a 1-0 loss at the hands of FC Cincinnati in a Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup match held at TQL Stadium. Despite outshooting (most of them were well wide of the goal), out-possessing, and generally getting better chances, LouCity could not finish their attempts, while FC Cincinnati’s substitutes brought some world-class talent that resulted in a game-winning goal. Argentine international Luciano Acosta slipped the ball through LouCity’s defense, and Alvaro Barreal provided the one-touch assist to Arquímides Ordóñez in the 85th minute.

Despite the defeat, LouCity’s Cameron Lancaster was particularly impressive in the first half, coming close to scoring on several occasions. LouCity coach, Danny Cruz, praised his team’s performance, stating that they created a lot of opportunities, even though they failed to convert them into goals.

LouCity’s performance was all the more impressive, given that they had made seven changes to their team from the previous game against Charleston Battery in league play. LouCity Defender Sean Totsch stated that there were more positives than negatives to take away from the game, and that if the team could replicate the same level of enthusiasm and spirit, they would be a tough team to beat.

The result marked the end of Louisville City’s run in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup and despite this, the team will take away many positives from their performance and will look to build on this in future games.

LouCity will confidently travel to Memphis this weekend, knowing that they pushed a Major League Soccer opponent to their limit. LouCity’s players and coaching staff are proud of their performance and feel as if they left everything on the field. The game with Memphis 901 FC on April 29, will be particularly interesting as Memphis 901 is coming off the CUpset win over MLS side Atlanta United.
