Not Enough Attack for LexSC in Loss to Charlotte

Lexington Sporting Club faced a disappointing 2-1 defeat on the road against Charlotte Independence at American Legion Memorial Stadium in Charlotte, NC. This loss marks the third consecutive defeat for Lexington SC and puts them at a record of 3-8-5 (14 points), currently occupying 10th place in the league standings. On the other hand, Charlotte’s victory improves their record to 7-5-5 (26 points), securing the fourth spot in the league.

Lexington SC came into the match following a demoralizing 5-1 loss at home against Tormenta FC, which stands as the club’s most significant margin of defeat in its history. Both teams started the game with intensity, but it was Charlotte who struck first, with Dane Kelly finding the back of the net in the 11th minute past Lexington’s goalkeeper, Amal Knight.

However, Lexington SC managed to level the match in the 35th minute when Rayan Djedje committed a foul in the box, resulting in a penalty kick for Lexington. Ates Diouf calmly converted the spot-kick, scoring his fourth goal of the season and bringing his team back into the game. The first half ended with both teams tied, each seeking to gain an advantage in the second half.

In the second half, both goalkeepers and solid defending prevented any immediate breakthroughs. However, in the 54th minute, Charlotte’s Tresor Mbuyu capitalized on an assist from Miguel Ibarra, finding the back of the net and ultimately securing the game-winning goal.

Despite controlling possession for 52.4% of the match and having a higher expected goals advantage of 1.78 to 1.03, Lexington SC was unable to convert their chances into goals. They came close on several occasions but were unable to find an equalizer before the final whistle.

Looking ahead, Lexington SC will face CV Fuego FC on July 15 in an away fixture before returning home on July 22 for a historic match against Union Omaha. The team will be eager to bounce back from this defeat and regain their winning form as they continue their campaign in the league.
