Racing Extend Rising Star DeMelo Through 2026
Racing Louisville secured the future of one of their brightest stars on Thursday, announcing a contract extension with midfielder Savannah DeMelo through the 2026 season.
The new long-term deal comes following DeMelo’s breakout campaign in which she has emerged as an MVP candidate and been called up to the US Women’s National Team.
“I am so excited to be extending my contract here in Louisville,” said DeMelo. “This was an easy decision because of how much I love this team and city!”
Still just 25 years old, DeMelo has been directly involved in 12 goals across all competitions this season, scoring eight times to go along with three assists. She also converted a penalty kick that was later ruled an own goal.
Her dynamic play has powered Racing to within striking distance of their first-ever playoff berth in just the club’s third NWSL season.
“We’re beyond excited to keep building our club’s foundation with Savannah as one of our cornerstone players,” said GM Ryan Dell.
DeMelo’s rapid improvement since being drafted by Racing in 2022 has been remarkable. She has added goal-scoring prowess to her game while still ranking among the league leaders in chances created and other playmaking categories.
Her well-rounded skill set allows her to contribute all over the pitch. She leads the NWSL with 45 fouls won and also ranks highly in duels won, tackles, and scoring chances created.
DeMelo forms one of the most potent midfielders in the league alongside captain Jaelin Howell and World Cup standout Ary Borges of Brazil.
“I’ve said this before Savannah’s development has been amazing since she came to the club,” noted coach Kim Björkegren. “She is already one of the best number 10s in the league, and she has the potential to be one of the best 10s in the world.”
The contract extension provides stability for Racing as DeMelo figures prominently in the club’s plans over the next four seasons. She joins Howell, Borges, Katie Lund, Carson Pickett, and others as core pieces of the future.
DeMelo also enjoyed a stellar rookie campaign last season, starting every match while leading the NWSL in multiple statistical categories. She claimed the July Rookie of the Month award.
Now a rising star for both club and country, the ceiling appears sky-high for the Texas native. At just 25, her prime years are still ahead.
Racing officials will be hoping this new deal allows DeMelo to realize her massive potential in purple and become the focal point of an eventual championship squad.
