In a move aimed at strengthening their defensive line, Louisville City FC announced the acquisition of New Zealand international defender Kyle Adams from fellow USL Championship side San Diego Loyal SC. The deal, pending league and federation approval, will see Adams bring his defensive prowess to the boys in purple. As part of the transaction, LouCity also loaned forward Enoch Mushagalusa to San Diego for the remainder of the 2023 season.

The addition of Adams comes at a crucial time for LouCity, as they seek to bolster their center back position. The departure of youth academy graduate Josh Wynder on a European transfer earlier this summer and the season-ending injury to Jordan Scarlett left a void in the team’s defensive line. With Adams joining the ranks, the team gains much-needed depth and versatility in their defensive setup.

LouCity’s head coach, Danny Cruz, expressed his excitement about the acquisition, stating, “Kyle is a defender who brings us a lot of quality both with and without the ball. Since Jordan’s injury, we’ve been actively searching for a center back, and this opportunity with Adams presented itself. We believe it gives us the flexibility in our tactical approach and the depth required to finish the season strongly.”

Adams, 26, is no stranger to the US soccer scene, having played collegiate soccer at San Diego State in California and forging a professional career in the United States. His journey includes stints at Rio Grande Valley FC, where he captained the team in 2019, and Real Monarchs, before joining San Diego Loyal SC in 2022.

Notably, Adams has represented New Zealand on the international stage, earning a senior team cap and featuring for his home country’s youth national teams. His experiences both domestically and internationally will undoubtedly contribute to LouCity’s defensive strength.

Additionally, Adams holds a Green Card, which means he will not count toward LouCity’s limit on international players, allowing the team to maintain roster flexibility.

For Adams, this move marks his first venture into the Eastern Conference of the USL Championship. In the current season, he has been a pivotal figure for San Diego Loyal SC, starting in 16 out of 18 appearances and leading the team in minutes played, aerial duels won, and clearances.

Expressing his enthusiasm for joining Louisville City FC, Adams said, “I’m ready to show the Louisville supporters the best version of myself on and off the field, and I’m hungry for success. This is a big club, and I’m excited to embrace the pressures and expectations that come with that. I’m ready to get to work, and I can’t wait to meet all the fans Saturday night.”

Adams wasted no time integrating into the squad, joining LouCity for training immediately after the announcement. Fans will have the opportunity to witness his debut in the much-anticipated rivalry matchup against Indy Eleven at Lynn Family Stadium this Saturday at 8 p.m.

The game promises to be a spectacle with a sellout push in progress, pregame giveaways, and postgame fireworks, making it a fitting stage for Adams to make his mark in his new team’s colors.
